Dame Judi Dench, Calibre Audio’s vice-president, shines a light on the importance of keeping stories accessible
Calibre Audio, the charity dedicated to transforming lives through accessible reading, today celebrates the release of Dame Judi Dench’s new memoir, ‘Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?’, published on 22 October 2026 and available for Calibre Audio members to borrow.

In an interview with the BBC, Dame Judi spoke about her life and experiences, including the challenges associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As Calibre Audio’s Vice-President, she shares a connection with the charity’s mission to ensure that people with a print disability can continue to access and enjoy books.
For over 50 years, Calibre Audio has helped people discover and enjoy reading in a way that works for them, providing books in accessible formats that enable members to explore new stories, maintain their independence and stay connected to the world around them.
Anthony Kemp, CEO at Calibre Audio, said: “Dame Judi Dench’s experience is a powerful reminder of why accessible reading matters. Books offer so much more than entertainment: they provide comfort, companionship, knowledge and connection. At Calibre Audio, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy books, whatever their circumstances, and we’re proud of Dame Judi’s long-standing connection with our charity.”
Dame Judi’s memoir offers readers a personal account of her extraordinary life and career spanning more than seven decades. Its publication provides an opportunity to highlight a wider message: reading should remain accessible to everyone, regardless of changes in their circumstances or abilities.
