Hamilton was released on Disney Plus at 8am GMT on 3 July 2020.

The film, which runs for two hours and 40 minutes, was originally meant to be released in cinemas in October 2021.

However, it was decided the film would be released earlier for streaming on Disney Plus first instead, due to the current coronavirus outbreak, and is expected to arrive in cinemas later this year.

    Who was Alexander Hamilton?

Alexander Hamilton was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, and was the Secretary of State during George Washington’s administration.

Born on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, Hamilton came from humble beginnings and later went on to take a role in the militia as the American Revolutionary War began against Britain’s King George III.

After the war, he was then elected as a representative from New York to the Congress of the Confederation.

He is also responsible for founding the first bank in North American - the Bank of New York - before going on to work as a lawyer.

However, he is most famed for being one of the American leaders who united the Thirteen Colonies, led the war for independence from Great Britain, and helped build a frame of government for the United States in the 18th century.

In 1804, Vice President Burr ran for governor of New York State and Hamiton campaigned against him as being unworthy.

Burr later challenged him to a duel, during which Hamilton was shot and mortally wounded, and he died the next day on 12 July 1804.

    Who stars in the musical?

The live stage production of the Broadway musical stars the original cast, with Lin-Manuel Miranda in the leading role as Alexander Hamilton.

Leslie Odom Jr. is also featured as Aaron Burr, Jonathan Groff as King George II, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton.

The unique production puts a new twist on the historic story, with hip-hop and R&B used to tell the tale.
