Police operation after student brings '˜grenade' to school

A full-scale evacuation and police operation is in place after a school student brought a hand grenade replica to class.

Police are still at the scene at The Buckingham School in London Road.

Officers were called at 11.51am to a report of suspected ordnance (term for bomb or grenade).

The item has since been found to be a plastic replica of an imitation hand grenade which the police believes was brought into school by a student.

The student has been identified and officers are currently working with the school to establish the circumstances of the incident.

The surrounding area of where the item was found has since been evacuated and officers are currently on scene ensuring the safety of staff and students.

School staff would like to reassure all parents that the item does not pose a risk to the students and staff on site.
