WATCH: First look at display of silhouettes to remember British servicemen who died on D-Day as it opens at country house near Aylesbury

A display of silhouettes to remember British servicemen who died on D-Day opened to the public at Waddesdon Manor this morning (Wednesday).

The Standing with Giants D-Day 1476: For Your Tomorrow exhibition, features 1,476 life-sized silhouettes around the grounds of the property, which is owned by The National Trust.

Each silhouette represents a member of service personnel who lost their life on D-Day under British command.

This is the third year of the display, and it includes new additions such as beach masters, dog handlers, Royal Navy officers, tank crew, merchant navy personnel and Royal Engineers.

Work to install the silhouettes has been taking place since they arrived at the site on September 27.

Dan Barton, co-founder of the Standing With Giants charity told the Bucks Herald: “We are absolutely thrilled to be here at Waddesdon Manor displaying our Normandy For Your Tomorrow installation.

“It represents 1,476 men who perished on the D-Day beaches under British command.

“We have been displaying it for several seasons in Normandy itself just beneath the British Normandy Memorial.

“The reaction from the public has been amazing - it has become an international story. People have come from all over to see it {in Normandy} and we have reached over a million visitors there.

“The reason we do this is to honour those who fought for our freedom.

“We always bring the installation back to the UK in the autumn, and it is great to be able to go between the UK {and Normandy} and tell the story.

“We have an incredible reaction from the public - so many people stand there and literally weep.

“It is a great way for younger people to get a visual representation of those that sadly perished, and people really connect with that.

“We hope as many people can get here as possible - we have spent two and a half weeks setting this up and we only have a five-week window.

“You cannot look at the whole installation {at Waddesdon} as one, even with a drone, but it is a fantastic site.”

The exhibition is free to view during the manor’s regular opening hours, as part of the admission price, but there are also opportunities to view it at dawn and twilight with entry for this priced at £15 for adults or £7.50 for children.

Standing with Giants silhouettes will be available to view at Waddesdon Manor, which is owned by the National Trust, until November 29.

The launch of the exhibition coincided with the reopening of the manor’s south front and parterre, which had previously been closed for works.

Works are also ongoing along the north front to install a ground source heat pump system, meaning the manor will be closely over the Christmas period, from November 29, 2026 until March 2027.
