Buckinghamshire MP reacts to Prime Minister’s resignation

A Buckinghamshire MP says they are ‘incredibly sorry’ after the Prime Minister announced his resignation this morning (Monday).

Callum Anderson, Labour Member of Parliament for the Buckingham and Bletchley constituency, described Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation statement, which was given outside Downing Street at just after 9.30am, as ‘incredibly dignified.’

Callum, who was elected as MP for the constituency in 2024, said: “I was incredibly sorry to learn of Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to resign as Prime Minister this morning.

“His statement was characteristically dignified.

“Under Keir’s leadership, the Labour Party went from its worst defeat in more than 80 years back to its historic role as the proud party of Government across our four nations, within a single parliamentary term.

“This journey wasn’t down to luck. Keir made the hard choices needed to root out the cancer of antisemitism from our party.

“He worked tirelessly to re-anchor Labour’s values in the priorities and aspirations of the British people.

“Without Keir’s leadership, and without the painstaking work of his team, I, along with many colleagues in the Parliamentary Labour Party, would never have had the privilege of serving as a Member of Parliament.”

Sir Keir, who has led the Labour Party since 2020, and became Prime Minister in 2024, will remain in office until the end of the Labour Party leadership election, which will be completed in time for the return of Parliament in September.

In his resignation statement Sir Keir said: “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.

“I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.

“Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first.

“That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party.

“I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision.”

Callum also called for Sir Keir’s resignation to serve as ‘a moment for wider reflection’ adding: “In an age of 24/7 media and social media, we too often treat political leaders as disposable and judge leadership through the lens of daily headlines rather than long-term national progress.

“As a country, we must find a better way.

“It is my party’s duty to find that path to greater resilience, perspective and political stability.”

Last month fellow Buckinghamshire MP Chris Curtis, who is the Member of Parliament for the Milton Keynes North constituency, gave an interview to Channel Four in which he said he had ‘so much respect’ for Sir Keir but believed it was the right time for him to resign.
