A new community-led market launching in Wendover this December aims to champion independent producers, revitalise the high street and raise money for local charities, with its success reinvested in the town.

A Buckinghamshire town is preparing to launch an ambitious new monthly market with a simple mission: support local businesses, bring people together and ensure the wider community benefits.

The Wendover Community Market is set to launch on Sunday 6 December 2026, on Manor Waste in the heart of Wendover, running from 10am to 2pm on the first Sunday of each month.

Founded by local businessman James Grant, owner of No2 Pound Street and founder of The Real Cheese Project, with Michael Hill of Whitewater Deli helping to establish the initiative, the market aims to become much more than a place to shop.

It will bring together independent farmers, growers, food producers, craftspeople and local businesses committed to quality, sustainability, ethical production and the communities they serve.

The organisers are establishing the market as a Community Interest Company (CIC), a social enterprise structure designed to benefit the community rather than generate private profit. Their ambition is to create a lasting community asset, with future surpluses supporting local projects, charitable causes and events.

BRINGING THE HIGH STREET TOGETHER

At a time when independent retailers and small producers face growing commercial pressures, the market aims to give people another reason to visit Wendover, explore its shops and support the businesses that make the town distinctive.

Rather than competing with the existing high street, the market hopes to strengthen it. Local shopkeepers are being encouraged to open on market Sundays, participate and help create a lively atmosphere throughout the town.

More local business owners and residents are also being invited to become involved in shaping the market's future.

James Grant, founder of Wendover Community Market, said: "We have some brilliant independent businesses in Wendover, alongside extraordinary farmers, growers and producers in the surrounding countryside. We want to bring them together and give people another reason to come into our town.

"This isn't about telling people where they should or shouldn't shop. It's about reminding people what we have on our doorstep and the difference it makes when we support the businesses and producers who are part of our communities.

"If we can encourage more people to shop locally, support producers who genuinely care about what they do, and raise money for local causes at the same time, then we're creating something with real purpose."

GIVING SOMETHING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

A central part of the market's purpose is supporting local charities.

Each month, a nominated local charity will be offered a pitch completely free of charge, giving it an opportunity to raise awareness of its work and engage directly with the community.

Participating traders will be invited to donate a product from their stalls, creating a hamper that will be presented to the charity at no cost. The charity can then raffle the hamper during the market, retaining the proceeds for its own fundraising.

The organisers also intend to keep pitch fees affordable for independent producers, with preferential rates for Wendover businesses.

As the market develops, the aim is to build a community fund from available surpluses, supporting local initiatives and helping finance further events for the town.

"We're not setting this up to make money for ourselves," Grant added.

"We want to create something that belongs to the community in spirit and purpose. The charities get their pitch for free, the traders contribute to the raffle hamper, and the money raised goes to the charity. It's a simple way for everyone to contribute.

"And as the market grows, we'd love to be able to put more back into Wendover, whether that's supporting community projects or creating other events that bring people together."

REAL PRODUCERS, REAL CONNECTIONS

The market will place particular emphasis on genuine producers and independent businesses, prioritising farmers, growers and makers with a direct connection to what they sell.

Responsible farming, animal welfare, environmental sustainability and thoughtful production methods will be important considerations in selecting traders.

Visitors can expect a diverse range of farm produce, food, handmade goods and products from independent businesses, with opportunities to meet the people responsible for making and growing them.

The aim is to strengthen the relationship between Wendover and the surrounding countryside, while helping smaller producers reach customers directly.

A SMALL TOWN WITH BIG AMBITIONS

Across Britain, communities are looking for new ways to support independent businesses and bring life back to their high streets.

Wendover Community Market hopes to demonstrate how a locally organised, community-focused market can contribute to that effort.

With its planned Community Interest Company structure, the organisers want to ensure that community benefit remains central to the market's development.

Grant and Hill are encouraging more Wendover business owners to get involved, helping to build an event that becomes a permanent part of the town's identity.

"We want people to feel proud of their town and the businesses within it," Grant said.

"There's something special about a community that supports its own. If we can build a market that brings people into Wendover, helps independent businesses thrive and gives something back, then everybody benefits.

"Ultimately, we'd love to see this become one of those Sunday’s people really look forward to, not just because of what's on sale, but because of the people they'll meet and the atmosphere it creates."

Wendover Community Market launches on Sunday 6 December 2026, from 10am to 2pm, on Manor Waste in Wendover.

Local producers, businesses, charities and residents interested in taking part are encouraged to get involved.
