Stewkley prepares to sing to mark a happy birthday

A choir that began with just 14 people and has now grown to 60 members will celebrate its 10th anniversary in concert with a spectacular and challenging piece of work.

Stewkley Singers was brought together by Jenny Morgan just before Christmas 2006 to form a church choir for a candlelit Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.

And some of those original 14 are still going strong in a choir that has evolved to include 60 choristers from the village and surrounding communities.

Over the years, the choir has sung classical music and songs from show musicals, in this country and abroad, and last year joined with a French choir to sing a Soiree Musicale.

Now the choir is in serious rehearsal for what might prove to be its biggest challenge yet.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their choir the members will perform the monumental and controversial work by Carl Orff, Carmina Burana, supported by a huge orchestra from the Wigmore Chamber Players.

The concert will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 7, at All Saints Church, Leighton Buzzard.

This mysterious 1930s work can be a challenge musically and also in the language text of Medieval Latin and Middle High German.

However, there is no doubt the members are finding rehearsals to be enormous fun as they sing and perform, and they expect to blow Leighton Buzzard clear away in a concert fitting for their 10th anniversary.

Tickets cost £12, under 18s £6 and the price includes refreshments, which will be served during the interval.

Tickets are available by calling Julie Sims on 01525 240671 or alternatively Jean Spier on 01525 240570 or from Room 9 on Leighton Buzzard High Street.
