John’s inspiration for a celebration creation

Oscar-nominated composer John Cameron’s works include film scores and theatrical works, but his latest creation is a labour of love for the choir to which he sometimes lends his voice.

The suite of nine choral pieces, and accompanying orchestral score, has been composed to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Ivinghoe-based Beacon Community Choir, and the world premiere takes place on Saturday night.

John, who lives in Ivinghoe Aston, said: “When choir director Judith Sheridan approached me, I was immediately attracted to the concept – a piece not only about the area we live and work it, but a piece with input from whoever wanted to contribute.

“Existing poems, new poems by choir members, images, local history narrative and snatches of prose and verse describing everything from local wildlife to the secrets of choir practice – all would find a place in the work. Musically it is firmly in the English choral and pastoral tradition but with a dose of contemporary music theatre thrown in.

“It is a celebration – a celebration of the work of the choir and the community, and of this unique corner of the country we live in.”

Saturday’s premiere is at St Mary the Virgin, Ivinghoe, starting at 7.30pm. £10 tickets are available from [email protected], children under 12 get in free.
