Dancing delights at the Waterside Theatre

Proudly celebrating its 20th year, the Richard Alston Dance Company returns to the Waterside for one night only next week with a knock out new programme showcasing Alston’s superbly skilled choreography.

Three separate dance works form the show which will take place on Thursday February 5 at 7.30pm.

Rejoice in the Lamb is a joyous company piece by Alston with beautiful music by Benjamin Britten.

Burning,Martin Lawrance’s latest piece, is inspired by the Dante Sonata of Franz Liszt, played live onstage and is an intensely dramatic dance.

    In his classic work Overdrive, Alston takes up the pulsating rhythm of modern Californian composer Terry Riley’s music and runs with it to the wire.

    Alston, artistic director of The Place, is internationally recognised as one of the most inspiring and influential choreographers in dance.

    He is known for his instinctive musicality, taking inspiration for his work directly from the music he uses.

    Born in Sussex in 1948 he was educated at Eton where he discovered his passion for music in the school gramophone library listening to Bach and Billie Holliday, or blasting Wagner’s Ring at the cows grazing outside.

    He then studied fine art and theatre design at Croydon College of Art in 1965, before becoming one of the very first students at the newly established London Contemporary Dance School in 1968.

    It was at this point that he started to choreograph, as he studied under the groundbreaking teaching of Robert Cohan and the leadership of Robin Howard, who first brought contemporary dance to the UK from America in the late 1950s.
