Console Corner: Abe is looking New ‘n’ Tasty

To anyone who like me was obsessed with computer games in the 90s, the mere mention of the words Oddworld or Abe spark happy, nostalgic memories of a gaming golden era.

There hasn’t been a new Oddworld game in nearly a decade (2005), and you have to go back another eight years for the original cult classic Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey (1997).

Now Just Add Water has quenched the thirst for a next gen version of the platformer with Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty!, the complete overhaul/remake of the classic Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey.

It arrived to download on PS4 last week and looks stunning.

After a good few hours play it is clear this is not just a cash in on nostalgia release, but rather a game that feels fresh, exciting, and welcoming to all fans of the genre even if they didn’t play the original, which is exactly how I came in.

If you sat down to play New ‘n’ Tasty for the first time, you’d never guess by looking at it that it’s an updated version of a game from nearly 20 years ago.

The artistic style is very appealing, and it looks like every character model, background, cinematic, and texture was completely rebuilt.

The main downside is some of Abe’s movement. He’s responsive enough, but there are some small sections that require more precise platforming than Abe can offer.

But this is still a real charmer of a game. In a world packed with HD remakes, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty deserves to be judged as more than a game that’s had some lippy applied for a new console generation.

The puzzles are every bit as smart and challenging and while it is not perfect there’ is more than enough to recommend shelling out the reasonable £19 to revisit your misspent youth.

Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey New ‘n’ Tasty is available now on PS4, and is coming soon to PC, Mac, PS3, PS Vita, Wii U, and Xbox One.
