Webber was present at Silverstone to carry out broadcast duties for Channel 4 television.

Interviewing Hamilton and the other podium finishing racers, Max Verstappen and Nico Rosberg on behalf of the FIA and F0M for the global television feed after the race, Webber was told by Hamilton: “Wow, this is amazing. The British Grand Prix is an great weekend for the fans and everyone has made this day really special. I would like to thank all the fans!”

Hamilton dominated the 52-lap race at the Home of British Motor Racing. Heavy rain saw the race start under Safety Car conditions, which was a decision not universally liked. With competitors leaving the grid in single file, racing did not start for a full five laps.

One underway properly, Hamilton was never troubled as he cruised to his fourth British success.

Webber said: “Lewis Hamilton was in superb form all weekend. He dominated qualifying and he never looked like he was going to be beaten in the race.

“His victory has blown the race for the world championship wide open, and Lewis now has the momentum in the chase for the title he will now be a very difficult man to beat.”
