Reading prove too good for spirited Aylesbury

Aylesbury Hockey Club’s ladies first team were beaten 3-1 after a close game against high-flying Reading IIs in Premier One of the Trysports Hockey League.

Reading, on their home turf, started the game at a fast pace and Aylesbury found themselves on the back foot but the well-drilled defence, led by Jess Boult and Ria Leadbetter, worked hard to rid the early danger.

The title-chasing home side continued to attack in numbers and Aylesbury were indebted to goalkeeper Jade Hedger, who pulled off some superb saved to frustrate the hosts.

She could do nothing about the opening goal, however, as Reading’s pressure finally paid off, but Ayesbury responded brilliantly with a good spell of their own, which was rewarded by a goal for Alice Rolfe, who deflected in Player of the Match Lucy Pott’s strike to bring the teams level at half-time.

In the same fashion as the 1st half, Reading restarted the game with a high intensity and quickly made it 2-1.

Again the visitors responded well with midfielders Beth Upton and Eliza Firth pushing high up the pitch in search of an equaliser, but Reading overturned possession and went onto score a third.

Despite a strong finish from the visitors, the game finished 2-1 to Reading which sees Aylesbury drop to sixth.

This weekend, Aylesbury host Wokingham.
