Aylesbury Hockey Club’s ladies first team began the new year with a 6-1 win over Henley IIs in Trysports Premier One.
The home side were dominant from kick-off and grabbed an early goal courtesy of Player of the Match Eliza Frith following a well-rehearsed short corner routine.
Sturdy defensive work by central defenders Emma Cooling and Hannah Pigott denied the visitors an equaliser before Angela Dickson deflected Lucy Potts’ shot to wrong-foot the Henley goalkeeper and double the advantage.
Aylesbury continued to pile on the pressure and their persistence paid off as Dickson doubled her goal tally following a clever link-up of play with captain Natasha James.
Henley pulled a goal back but Aylesbury remained on the front foot and they soon restored their three-goal lead when Alice Rolfe slipped the ball under the goalkeeper for a goal that was quickly followed by a fifth as skipper James netted.
Henley provided more of a threat after half-time and only a goal-saving block from Jess Boult plus some fine goalkeeping from Jade Hedger maintained Aylesbury’s lead.
With 10 minutes to play, Voirrey Holmes added her name to the score sheet following a neat one-two with fellow striker Dickson.
Aylesbury travel Oxford ladies IIs away this weekend.
