Former Vale of Aylesbury Athletic Club athlete Ben Gregory made an impressive return from injury when he claimed the senior men’s heptathlon title at the England & Wales Athletics Senior Combined Events Championships in Sheffield last weekend.
The Great Britain athlete, who competed for Wales in last year’s Commonwealth Games, was third after day one but an 8.27secs run in the hurdles earned him 915 points and moved him to to second.
His superb 4.91m pole vault then gave him 883 points which put him in the overall lead with just the 1,000m left, and a solid performance in the final event saw him finish with a total of 5,662 points, which was good enough to take the title in a season’s best performance.
Ben was one of three local athletes who were recognised at Welsh Athletics Awards Evening at the end of last year. He won Male Track Athlete of the year for his performances in the pole vault and decathlon.
Track & Field official of the Year was John Collins, who is also a past member of the Vale club and former pupil of Aylesbury Grammar School. John competed for the club in the 1950s.
