Vale of Aylesbury’s Jess Hunter is the UK’s new number one 60m hurdler after she recorded a new personal best at a Welsh international indoor event held in Cardiff.

Hunter clocked 8.47 seconds, which puts her at the top of the UK rankings this year, and was just 0.02s outside the competition and is only 0.04s slower than Jessica Ennis-Hill’s best time at the same age.

It also means she is now ranked number 20 on the all-time U20 60m hurdles rankings.

Jess won her first race at the event and came a close second in the next, but beat all the England and Welsh internationals in both races.

She was taking part as a guest of England Athletics and will now concentrate on working to qualify for the GB team for the U20 European Championships.

Although Jess is a multi-eventer, her coach Scott Grace says that she is starting to focus on sprint hurdles but is likely to do other events later in the season.

Jess also had an excellent 2014 track season, which included winning silver at the English Schools Championships,
