Winslow continue resurgence to pull clear of trouble

United have spent much of the season in the bottom two but a recent upturn in form has seen them pull away from danger with eight points now separating them from relegation.

This week, Winslow recorded a vital 3-1 victory against fellow strugglers Arlesey Town Reserves, which was followed by a 1-1 home draw with Southall on Tuesday.

Scott Reynolds handed debuts to goalkeeper Jack Sillitoe, who has signed for the club on-loan from Aylesbury United, and striker Joel McCormick for the game against Arlesey, and both made contributions to the victory with McCormick setting up Juyin Oluwayemi for the opener before the former Buckingham Town man bagged one himself to put Winslow 2-0 ahead.

Drew Mitten then wrapped up the points with a third shorlty after half-time before Arlesey scored a consolation.

Speaking afterwards, Reynolds said: “Overall it was a good day at the office. It was a vital game in the relegation battle and I’m pleased we managed to get over the line first and ride out what was a scrappy game on a heavy surface.

“I had to reshuffle the side slightly because both Yaacob and Mustafa were caught up in traffic and I wasn’t sure if they would make it for kick-off.

“This gave me the chance to hand both Juyin Oluwayemi and Joel McCormick their first starts for the club and both players justified my selection by scoring a goal each and working hard.

“Our link-up play between the midfield and forwards in first half was very effective and pleasing on the eye.

“Aylesbury loanee Jack Sillitoe made a great double save on brink of half-time which kept us two up at the break.

“The second half started OK, we got the third with relative ease but took our foot off the gas and struggled to play much football on the pitch as it got heavier and cut up.

“I’m pleased we played, won and most importantly got back to winning ways.”

On Tuesday, Winslow came from a goal behind to earn a point against Southall. After a goalless first half, Roderick Osei Owusu put the visitors ahead on 58 minutes before Nick Farrow lashed home an injury-time equaliser.

“We’ve got to be happy with the result given the time in which we managed to find an equaliser,” said Reynolds.

“Again we started the game well and had early opportunities but sadly couldn’t convert.

“Southall hassled and hurried us along, but when we did play football in the right areas we looked dangerous.

“We conceded a soft goal, which was well finished, but other than that our keeper didn’t have a save to make.

“We now face three very tough away games at Risborough, Bedford and Harpenden. We currently sit eight points clear of the bottom two and have lost just one in our last nine matches.”

Winslow travel to Risborough Rangers this weekend.
