Toothless Moles slump to timid home defeat

The visitors will of course be the more satisfied, however both sets of supporters will feel some trepidation if this encounter was anything to go. Bereft of any quality, all it took was an early second-half header to claim all of the points.

Bedford captain Luke Knight was one of the few men willing to bring anything like a degree of quality to proceedings and he had the first chance of the game on six minutes when shooting just wide.

An errant backpass was almost cut out by FC’s Martin Griggs and from the resultant corner, Kieron Turner cracked a decent effort goalwards that the keeper held.

The first of numerous free kicks was conceded by Aylesbury, Adam Watkins could only strike the ball wide, while Lee Roach nipped onto an errant backpass but FC keeper Ashley Jenkins narrowed the angle forcing the ball wide.

On the half-hour, Jordan Jenkins volleyed high when composure was needed before FC’s best move of the game followed as Vinny Greco swept the ball out to the right finding Griggs in space but the striker’s shot was harmless.

On the stroke of half-time, a glanced header from Tommy Hull flashed wide of the post in one of the handful of decent chances for either team.

After the break, Jemale McKenzie-Lowe could have opened the scoring but it was left to his team-mate Knight who rose unchallenged to place the ball home.

Further half chances came as the away side continued their leisurely amble around Haywood Way, a free-kick by Nathan Fraser caused concern but without the end product.

FC made changes to try and instil some attacking verve, and they finally created their first real opening of the half, only for Griggs’ looping effort to miss the target.

As the minutes ticked away, FC became desperate with Griggs’ 20-yard effort off target, and he had his final chance of the game with two minutes to go but again it was unconvincing and sailed harmlessly over the bar, ending a miserable afternoon.

The Moles are 18th and host AFC Dunstable this week.
