Rangers hit five to cruise into county cup final

Risborough Rangers eased into the final of the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup after an emphatic 5-1 home win against Thames Valley League Premier Division side Cookham Dean.

The hosts opened the scoring as early as the third minute with a superb 20-yard strike from Sam Ward which dipped over Cookham’s goalkeeper.

Martin Griggs doubled the lead from the spot five minutes later when, after a great run on the right, Gary Rymer passed to Griggs who was pushed in the back and a penalty was given.

And just another 12 minutes had passed when Risborough’s Danny Gray made it three after good build-up play and a pinpoint cross into the box allowed him to slot in from six yards.

It remained 3-0 until half-time and the second half continued in similar vein with Risborough pushing for a further goals.

Chris Davies made the pressure count and slotted home after neat footwork 10 minutes after the restart before Danny Gray claimed his second of the match with a dynamic run that culminated in a tap in from close range on the hour.

Cookham scored a consolation and could have doubled their tally ten minutes from time but were denied when Rangers’ outstanding goalkeeper Jack Brooker saved a penalty.

Rangers now face Olney of United Counties League Division One in the final which takes place on April 2 at the neutral venue of Newport Pagnell FC.

Risborough faced Baldock Town last night, Tuesday, and host Brimsdown this Saturday.
