A single strike from Daniel Parsons 10 minutes from time was enough for Hale Leys United to notch their second win from two games this season, beating Grendon Rangers 1-0 in South Midlands League Division Two.
After making the short trip, Hale were quick onto the attack with efforts from Alex Woodfine and Nathan Graham saved by the goalkeeper.
Parsons also went close for United as his 35-yard shot landed on top of the net, while Grendon enjoyed their own spell of pressure with a succession of corners but Hale keeper Ashley Jenkins was on hand to keep the scores level at half-time.
The visitors began the second half as they did the first but with Grendon proving hard to break down, manager Paul Alleyne was forced to shake things up with Niall Williams and Callum Jenkins entering the fray.
This made an immediate impact as Williams won a free-kick which was fired just over by Woodfine before some excellent link-up play finally broke the deadlock.
It came on 80 minutes when Williams and Woodfine combined to set up Parsons to slot for a deserved lead.
Hale continued to push forward but one goal was all they needed to make sure of the three points despite some late Grendon pressure.
Hale boss Alleyne said afterwards: “The boys were unlucky not to score in the first half. If they had, it would have settled them down earlier in the game, however we kept up the tempo and pressure and got the result we came for.
“This league will be tougher this year as every team has stepped their game up so we now need to raise our performances too.
“Man of the Match had to be Daniel Parsons who again was quality. He was a constant headache for Grendon.
“We face a tough succession of games in the coming days as Tuesday we travel to Old Bradwell, who are always a tough side, then Saturday we go to Stony Stratford Town who are new to our division.
“Both sides have started their campaigns well like us so it will be a tough test again.
“A big thank you to all who travelled to support us against Grendon. It’s really great to see the support building for this club.”
