With the majority of matches played on council pitches, the ADL and Sunday Combination were hit hard by the weather at the weekend.
Thousands of local footballers were left twiddling their thumbs as most games were called off due to waterlogged pitches... all that is except one.
The players of SLN sides SFG FC and Aylesbury United defied the odds and got their match on after the pitch at The War Memorial Ground in Stone was deemed playable by referee Chris Ludlow.
Ironically towards the end of 2013, both sides had contacted the league to express concerns over the running of their clubs and for a time, their futures were in doubt.
Aylesbury United cruised to the Division One title last season as well as coming runners up in The Vale of Aylesbury Cup while SFG, re joining after a year’s absence, remain the league’s only remaining side in County Cup Junior competitions.
Thankfully for both sides, and the league itself, the clubs appear to have re-grouped and now enter 2014 with renewed optimism.
It showed as they braved the conditions to fight out an entertaining match. Aylesbury, with a stronger turnout of 15 players, go into the top half of the table after a fine 5-2 win thanks to goals from Chris Shennan, Darren Woolard, Archie White, Stuart Creaser and Dwayne Ryan. SFG fall into the bottom half and their scorers were Andy Higginson and Martin White.
In the ADL, the County Cups always take precedence so all four will take place this weekend coming – weather permitting – but fortunately 95% of fixtures were just moved back a weekend and the league is generally on course fixtures wise.
The Sunday Combination schedule is ‘slightly behind’ acording to a league spokesman.
But this has been brought about mainly due to the success of its sides rather than the weather! According to the league, this season saw the longest run of uninterrupted fixtures for a number of years.
The decision for most teams to close down on Sunday December 22 and the league’s decision to shut down the following Sunday now look vindicated as the weather took a turn for the worse with lots of pitches waterlogged.
A spokesman said: “Sadly, we now have a situation where some sides have finished their first set of 13 league games while some still have several left to play.
“The league’s management committee will meet this Friday where we should be in a position to make plans for the split and subsequent fixtures.”
