Athletic kept the pressure on and should have had a penalty a few minutes later when Stewart King was tripped from behind, but neither the referee nor his assistant were interested in the appeals.

With time running out, Athletic produced a good move down the left, with full-back Kevin McManus collecting the ball and then firing low into the area. Stewart King met the ball at the near post to bag what proved to be the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time.

It was an excellent win for Tring against a difficult side to break down.
