Early goal sinks Tring

A goal after 97 seconds was enough for high-flying Sun Sports to see off Tring Athletic in the South Midlands League Premier Division.

After taking the scalp of leaders Kings Langley in their previous game, Tring were hopeful of causing another upset but a defensive mix-up allowed Nathan Pooley to fire his side into a lead inside two minutes.

Undeterred by this early setback, Tring spent much of the game on top with Stuart Stedman shooting just over and Vinnie Lannone striking the post.

In the second period, Athletic were in the ascendancy for large periods and had chances to level as both Chris Vardy and Stedman whipped in dangerous crosses that only needed a finishing touch.

Jack Hopwood then saved well from Ashley Lewis before Taylor Collins saw a long-range effort flash just wide but, despite it being all one-way traffic in the final 15 minutes, the home side were unable to break down the stubborn Sun Sports defence.

The result keeps Tring 10th in the Premier Division. This weekend, Athletic open the new year with a home game against another team chasing promotion, AFC Dunstable.
