Bucks and Beds thwarted by British weather in Championship clash

Shelvin Gumbs scored a brilliant century for Bucks this week but they had to settle for a draw in their weather-disrupted Unicorns Counties Championship match against Bedfordshire at Luton.

Heavy rain, which completely washed out play on day two and curtailed action on the other two days, meant that both teams had to try and contrive a result by forfeiting an innings, without success.

Beds, who chose to bat first, declared at their first day total of 241-4 and then forfeited their second innings, after Bucks had forfeited their first innings.

This left Bucks a target of 242 in 61 overs for victory, and they made a poor start, slipping to 18-3.

But Gumbs restored the visitors’ innings with exactly 100, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 144 with Dan Hampton.

Bucks lost further cheap wickets near the end but held on for a draw on 188-7, with Hampton finishing unbeaten on 60.

Bucks gave a Championship debut to Alex Woodland who opened the batting and made three.

Bucks’s next Championship game is against Cumberland at High Wycombe from July 3-5.
