Transport: Millions hit the roads in search for Boxing Day bargains

An estimated 5.6 million drivers will hit the roads today in the hope of bagging post-Christmas bargains, according to new figures1 from Green Flag Breakdown.

Boxing Day traffic will peak mid-morning as bargain hunters on average plan to set out around 10.30am.

However, 13 per cent will be taking the ‘early bird’ approach and hitting the shops between 5am and 9am.

Around 10.4 million (21 per cent) shoppers will be looking to do more of their Christmas shopping in the sales this year to save money on gifts. A further 3 million (six per cent) have even agreed with friends and family to buy each other presents after Christmas Day in order to save money.

The study highlights the need for shoppers planning on driving to the sales to think carefully about their alcohol intake on Christmas Day. On average, Boxing Day drivers who drink on December 25 will consume 6.6 units.

However more than 240,000 (four per cent) of Boxing Day drivers will have sunk the equivalent of 16 or more units on Christmas Day, putting them potentially at risk of being over the limit the following day.

Miranda Schunke of Green Flag said: “Savvy shoppers have long taken advantage of fantastic bargains available in the post-Christmas sales, but it seems this year the number of people on the roads on Boxing Day will swell with those still looking to purchase Christmas presents.

“Those planning on heading to the sales need to plan ahead of time, ensuring that their ability to drive hasn’t been compromised by the excesses of Christmas Day.

“Similarly, whilst no one wants to miss a good deal, it is important for drivers to stay calm and collected when faced with congestion on the roads – after all, a traffic accident will cause far longer delays.”
