Bicester hold on to claim victory over Aylesbury

Aylesbury Hockey Club’s ladies first team followed up last week’s cup victory with a slender 3-2 defeat to Bicester in Trysports Premier One.

Bicester took the lead following a fast start, but Aylesbury reacted well with striker Lucy Potts shooting just wide from Angela Dickson’s precise pass before Jess Boult was forced off injured.

Bicester then doubled their lead despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Jade Hedger, but on the stroke of half-time, Aylesbury were awarded a short corner and Eliza Frith and Hannah Pigott set up Player of the Match Alice Rolfe with an easy finish to reduce the arrears.

From the restart the visitors looked the more likely team to score the start of the second half but their failure to convert a series of short corners came back to haunt them as Bicester scored a third against the run of play.

Aylesbury refused to give up, though, as Gemma Hunter-Barnes played in striker Rolfe, who took on the last defender and squared the ball to captain Natasha James to slide in and give her side a glimmer of hope, but it proved to be too little too late as Bicester dropped deep to thwart the visitors and hold on for victory.

Aylesbury drop to fourth in the league and face high-flying Reading IIs at home this weekend.
