MedicAlert UK is proud to launch a new free safeguarding initiative for people living with dementia and their families across Buckinghamshire. The Herbert Protocol - now available via a dedicated website at www.herbertprotocol.com/ - offers vital tools and resources to help protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
With support from Thames Valley Police, this initiative is designed to improve response times and outcomes when a person living with dementia goes missing. Families and carers can now securely complete and store a Herbert Protocol form for free within the MedicAlert emergency service database, making critical information immediately accessible to emergency services when every second counts.
The Herbert Protocol, named after Normandy veteran George Herbert who lived with dementia and went missing, has been widely adopted by UK police forces, including Thames Valley Police. It enables authorities to access essential details such as medical history, daily routines and favourite places, which can assist in locating someone quickly and safely.
- Free, secure registration: Residents can create a user profile and upload a completed Herbert Protocol form completely free of charge.
- Improved emergency response: When someone is reported missing, police can contact MedicAlert on the 24/7 emergency helpline to access critical information, potentially reducing search time and improving outcomes.
- -Trusted support: With backing from Thames Valley Police, families in Buckinghamshire can feel reassured that their information will be used responsibly and effectively in an emergency.
Dementia affects nearly 1 million people across the UK, with around 40,000 reported missing for the first time each year. 70% of those living with dementia will go missing at least once. By storing key information centrally through MedicAlert, emergency services like Thames Valley Police can act quickly.
