Back in Time: The changing face of Walton Street

Walton Street in Aylesbury has been redeveloped many times over the years.

It has gone from a narrow street packed with tiny buildings on both sides to a busy dual carriageway with large office blocks and apartment complexes.

This photograph from 1967 looks towards Holy Trinity Church from the forecourt of what was then Cogger & Hawkins.

The Church Army hut is next to there with its corrugated roof.

At that time it was home to the Elmhurst Youth Centre.

On the opposite side of the street is the Ship Inn which was demolished in 2008.

The large concrete building further up the street had recently been completed.

It was called Planar House and had offices on the upper floors with a garage and other shops including the much loved Lotus Garden restaurant on the ground floor.

This building didn’t last long as it was demolished in the early 1990s.

The site is now Old Brewery Close.
