Peter Kay's Car Share finale: 'We hope people won't be screaming at the telly again'

Following on from the unscripted episode earlier this month, Peter Kay's Car Share comes to a proper conclusion next week with the finale on Monday night.

The award-winning BBC comedy, which has amassed a devoted fanbase, will see Kay and Sian Gibson reprise their roles as John Redmond and Kayleigh Kitson one last time.

This final episode will reveal just what happens next to John and Kayleigh. Will they finally get together?

'Giving the characters a resolve'

In a series of comments by Peter Kay and Sian Gibson released by the BBC, Kay expressed his hope that viewers "won't be screaming at the telly again" after the final episode.

He and Gibson also said it was "crazy" (in a good way) that viewers had set up a petition demanding more Car Share after season two's cliff-hanger ending.

Kay added it is "incredibly flattering" to see how much people care about the characters.

"We always knew the second series would end that way and we thought people might be a bit miffed but never thought they would be so devastated.

"We decided to write another episode that hopefully gave the characters a resolve and I thought let's hold this back until the repeat of the second series. It was hard to keep it a secret after the reaction we got, but we never said that there wouldn't be any more Car Share's  - we just said there wouldn't be a third series..."

The duo say they will "hopefully, definitely" work together on another TV project at some point. Could Car Share make another surprise return too?

"Never say never," states Gibson.

Favourite moments

Looking back on the series as a whole, Gibson believes the funniest moment was when the pair "dressed as Harry Potter and Hagrid giving Elsie the female Smurf a lift home from a works do".

Kay also points to the scenes with Game of Thrones actor Conleth Hill. "He was hilarious and we just couldn't film the scenes for laughing. We even had to come back the next night to finish filming it and it we still laughed. There are some great out-takes."

As for what the pair will miss most about the show, they had this to say.

"I'll miss all the fun we have filming," notes Gibson. "But as I see Peter all the time it doesn't feel like they've gone away. We speak nearly every day."

"You see I won't miss John and Kayleigh," added Kay. "We're right here."
