Firefighters are supporting a national campaign urging people to register domestic appliances in the event of product recalls over safety issues.

The campaign, launched today (Monday) by AMDEA, the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances, is aiming to reach the thousands of owners who are virtually impossible to trace if a product recall notice is issued or a safety repair is required.

Firefighter Richard Priest says taking time to register appliances could save lives.

“Good ownership data is key to getting safety information to the people who need it,” he said.

“We are encouraging everyone to invest a little time to register their appliances to reduce the risk of home fires and to give them peace of mind.”

AMDEA’s Register My Appliance website provides access to the registration pages of 62 leading brands of domestic appliances and includes a list of products that have been recalled.

White goods, televisions, vacuum cleaners and a whole host of other items up to 12 years old can be registered.

AMDEA is the UK trade association for the manufacturers of large and small domestic appliances, representing more than 85 per cent of the domestic appliance industry. Members are all manufacturers, importers or distributors of household appliances.

Their products include most of the UK’s top selling brands of major white goods, other large and small kitchen appliances, heating, water heating, floor care, waste disposal and ventilation equipment.

Association members have pledged that Register My Appliance is purely a safety initiative, and the information captured will only be used if required for safety notices.
