A fire in a storage building at The Long Dog brought the A41 through Waddesdon to a halt – and the pub thinks the wind helped prevent flames from spreading.
The blaze broke out around 2pm and police were quick to shut the road in both directions.
Two fire crews tackled the fire which started in an outbuilding, used for storage.
Witnesses said smoke could be seen from as far away as Edgcott.
The Long Dog used twitter and facebook to reassure people that the fire was contained and reopened at 4pm.
It said: “We may have slightly over-smoked the mackerel somewhat.
“But we are all ok and the actual pub is ok and we will be open as normal from about 4pm #fingerscrossed.”
Once the damage had been assessed, the pub took to facebook to say the outbuilding had been ‘devastated’.
It said: “We’ve lost a lot of stuff, as have some friends and customers who used the space, but no one was hurt.
“Thank you to the firefighters and police, thanks to the understanding customers and staff, but most of all thank you to the wind for blowing away from the thatch on top of our precious pub.”
