'˜Two Syrian refugees a month come to county'

According to figures revealed by the Guardian newspaper one in four local authorities are refusing to take in migrant children from Syria. Thiry-eight councils out of 156 have refused to take part in resettlement programme.

Labour councillor Robin Stuchbury said: “When you read through the column inches it’s actually a hard job to get to where the truth is, what the realities are, and how it will impact on Buckinghamshire.

“Are we in contact with ministers about our obligations? And if we do have any, are we financially secure enough to take these children on? And if we aren’t, are we going to get some finances to support us because we do have a moral obligation along with all other Counties in the country to support these children.”

Responding, Cllr Lin Hazell said: “There is funding available when we take these youngsters. We’ve been offering two a month up until March then we will have to review the situation. It is obviously going to cause some pressures and stresses but we have to find them safe harbour.”

Home Secretary Amber told MPs that 800 children with family links with Britain have been interviewed by Home Office officals in the past week.

She added almost 200 children had been brought to Britain last week alone.
