Fundraising and helping women across the globe were two main themes for the Buckinghamshire Federation of Women’s Institutes at the annual meeting, held at the Waterside Theatre for The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW).
Members of the WI are automatically members of ACWW, which connects and supports women and communities worldwide providing financial assistance to projects that directly involve and benefit rural women.
A treasure hunt was held in Bourne End on April 29 to coincide with ACWW’s 5th Women Walk The World event, raising funds for its current project.
Last year BFWI raised £2,600 for a project in south east India and plans to raise £5,650 by the end of 2017 for a project helping young women and girls in the Oku region of Cameroon.
The meeting also took delivery of more than 3,000 bras, weighing an estimated 150kg, to help women in Africa. The WI will receive 70p per kilo and the bras are sent to a firm in the West Midlands who sort them, repair where possible and then work in tandem with a company that ships them to Africa.
