Bed-ridden John Batey, 58, got into trouble at his Tingewick home when he slipped out of bed and wedged his arm against a cabinet.

In a state of panic and needing urgent help, he phoned Vets4Pets in Buckingham which cares for his Jack Russel Benji.

“I dropped everything and dashed over there,” said vet manager Michael Doherty.

“He was sweating profusely, breathing heavily and wasn’t in a good way at all.

“I was concerned that if we didn’t get him moved back onto the bed, he could get an aneurysm or a blood clot.”

Michael needed some assistance to haul John upwards so he rushed out into the street.

He managed to flag down plumber Rob McFetrich who was passing by and together they lifted John back onto his bed.

“It’s not a service we provide but we do what we can,” said Michael.

“It’s such a great honour that Mr Batey trusted us to
help him in such a time of need.”

John used to work at
Focus in town before it shut down.

He suffers from a multitude of conditions including diabetes and he is currently recovering from a hip operation.

John was struggling for air and when he failed to activate his emergency bracelet, he reached for the phone.

“I was in complete agony,” said John who needs daily medication and visits from care staff.

“I just didn’t know who to call so I phoned the vets and they said they would come out as soon as they could.

“I’ve thank them very much and I really don’t know what would have happened without them.”

An ambulance crew arrived to carry out checks and John has made a full recovery, with Benji by his side.
