Tango as you’ve never seen it before

I did wonder whether I would enjoy a whole evening of tango. I’m left a bit cold by the aggressive style of tango that seems to be favoured on Strictly, all mean and moody and scowly faced.

So I thought I’d leave it to the experts to convince me tango can be fun, as World Argentine Tango Champions and Strictly superstars Flavia Cacace and Vincent Simone take in Milton Keynes Theatre this week on their farewell tour of The Last Tango.

And boy, did they convince me.

There wasn’t a hint of the sulks in the whole show.

Instead, it told a moving and elegant love story, in dance.

From first meeting, through blossoming romance, separation, marriage and eventual tragic loss, the couple showed how tango can express a whole range of emotions.

Flirtatious or serene, joyous or heartbroken, Flavia expressed it all in her body, while her little legs flew faster than humanly possible as she performed flicks and kicks with precision accuracy.

Vincent and Flavia were supported by an ensemble crew of eight energetic dancers and singers.

And it wasn’t just tango all evening. We were treated to a range of dance styles, from rock n roll to Viennese waltz.

But they saved the best till last. Receiving a standing ovation from the first night crowd at Milton Keynes Theatre, Flavia and Vincent treated the MK Theatre audience to the fastest and most furious tango you have ever seen.

Simply breathtaking.

The Last Tango is at Milton Keynes theatre until tomorrow, Saturday, and at the time of writing there are still a few tickets available.

The tour continues until next July and the show will be back in the region in March, when it lands at Northampton’s Derngate Theatre.
