Talented young writers win prizes in Rotary competition

Twenty talented youngsters who are winners of this year's Wendover Rotary Christmas Story Competition attended a presentation ceremony at Weston Turville School.

Year 6 pupils from Aston Clinton Combined, Long Marston Primary, Wendover Junior and Weston Turville Schools had written stories about Christmas, providing 150 stories in all. Each of the 20 winners had their story published in a book available at the event on Thursday, February 4. They were also given an Usbourne Dictionary for Life and a Highly Commended certificate.

The top three story writers in each school were given Amazon vouchers. These winners had been chosen by the first judges who were adults including Rotarians and members of a Wendover Book Club.

Phil Bannister, area manager of Harpenden Building Society, gave out the prizes to the winners from each school and sponsored the competition.

The 20 stories were then given to a panel of John Colet pupils for overall third, second and first prizes and the authors each received a silver cup trophy to keep.

Pupils and families alike were clearly thrilled as the three overall winning stories were read out for all to enjoy.

Special thanks must go to Julie Kaplan of John Colet School who co-ordinated the John Colet judges and took back their thank you prizes. Roger Phillips, Rotary District Youth Service Chair, gave out the cups to the overall winners.

Chalmers Cursley, Rotary District Governor Elect made the closing remarks, warmly congratulating all the winners and thanking President Linda Downey and her Wendover Rotary for organising this annual competition for the sixth time.
