Supernan medic goes beyond the call of duty after head-on crash in Buckingham

Tracy Howe, 46, who lives in Tingewick, had just left the supermarket when her daughter Zoe phoned to say there had been a nasty car crash.

And despite being off-duty at the time, Tracy dashed to Tingewick Road and stabilised the victims for 10 minutes until her co-workers arrived.

Tracy, who joined South Central Ambulance after being involved in a crash herself on the same road in 2012, said: “I was just doing my job.

“I’d just been to do a small shop when Zoe, who works at The Royal Oak, phoned to say someone had raced in the pub panicking and they didn’t know what to do.

“I saw the blue flashing lights of the police cars and saw there had been quite a horrendous head-on. But there were no other cars on the scene, so I jumped in.”

A 53-year-old woman who suffered leg injuries and a man, in his 60s, who had a suspected collapsed lung, were both rushed to hospital.

They are now recovering but it was Tracy’s intervention which gave the pair the best chance of pulling through.

Tracy, who is also a carer for her husband, John, was driving her Peugeot 806 when it crashed with an articulated lorry on the same road in 2012.

Her grandson Kieron, aged two at the time, fractured his skull and had to be flown to hospital where he stayed for a week. He made a full recovery and the experience inspired Tracy to join the ambulance service.

She said: “The NHS have done an awful lot for my family over the years so I wanted to do something to give back.”
