The barrel was leaking in a lay-by off the A413 near Winslow, between Dunton Road and the turning to Hoggeston, so a 100 metre cordon was set up.

A fire crew from Buckingham joined specialist teams from Aylesbury and Great Missenden to shut the road between 1.30pm and 2.45pm this afternoon while the substance was tested.

They found out it was a nonhazardous resin, which is commonly used in construction, and reopened the road.

Crew manager Kieron Thomas, who led the operation, said: “It was giving off an amount of steam or smoke and it was quite warm.

“We monitored it and checked it out. Resin can be used for building and construction so it will have fallen off the back of a lorry or have been fly-tipped.

“There’s nothing to worry about. It’s all been checked by specialist teams and it will soon be collected.”
