A former mechanic in the Royal Air Force celebrated his 105th birthday just before Christmas with a family get-together.

Sam Marshall, a resident at the Chiltern Court Nursing Home in Wendover for just over five years was born in Scotland on December 23, 1910.

As a young man he moved to England and worked at the De Havilland aircraft factory.

He served in the RAF during the Second World War where he helped to repair damaged planes as a mechanic.

He later worked as a caretaker at a school in London.

In 1994 Mr Marshall moved to the Vale after his retirement and lived in Bowler Road, Hawkslade until 2001 when he moved to Birch Court retirement home.
