Rugby fans can get up close and personal with the world cup when it goes on show in Market Square and at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

The Webb Ellis Cup will be on public display on Saturday with a chance for fans to grab a selfie with the sport’s greatest prize.

It will arrive in the Vale on day 73 of the tour, before ending up at Twickenham for the start of the tournament when England host Fiji on September 18.

Fans can see the cup in Aylesbury town centre between 2pm and 4pm and then at Stoke Mandeville Stadium between 5pm and 7pm – where there is a rugby and wheelchair rugby festival taking place.

Neil Blake, leader of Aylesbury Vale District Council, said: “Being part of the Rugby World Cup is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m delighted fans and families will have the opportunity to experience World Cup fever for themselves.

“All that will be left to do afterwards is cheer on the rugby players as they aim to keep the trophy in England after the tournament.”

The 38cm high cup is named after William Webb Ellis, the Rugby schoolboy who - according to legend - picked up the ball during a game of football and ran with it.
