Of the 62 entered, there are seven newcomers including Ludgershall, Ickford and Oving, all in Aylesbury Vale.

Competition chairman Richard Pushman said: “The first indications are that we have some very strong contenders competing this year, so we’re really looking forward to seeing how they fare during the judging process.

“Whether they go on to win or not, they are all keen to compete and show that they are trying to look after their villages.

“We’re not looking for chocolate box villages but for communities which are looking after their environment and their assets.

“We wish them every success.”

Judging takes place throughout June with the results expected to be announced in mid-July. Entrants are assessed on various features within their villages with categories covering playing fields, recreation grounds, village halls, war memorials, noticeboards and areas around pubs.

The judges are also looking for evidence of community effort.
