Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne is a member of the Council of Europe and the European Security and Defence Assembly and a former Member of the European Parliament (1999-2009).

She now serves as a working peer in the United Kingdom’s House of Lords where she is Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Foreign Affairs and the APPG for Economic Development in Iraq and the Region.

Formerly a member of the Tory party, she left in 1995 to become an MP for the Liberal Democrats. During her time as the European Parliament’s Rapporteur for Romania the Romanian laws on inter country adoption were amended.

From 1999-2004 Baroness Nicholson was Vice-President of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Defence & Security Policy; and from 2004-2009 was Vice- President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights. She wrote The Iraqi Marshlands which details the destruction of native marshlands as a result of dams commissioned by Saddam Hussein.

The University of Buckingham public lectures are free to attend and open to all.
