Aylesbury MP applauds local efforts to tackle climate change, following G7 summit

Aylesbury MP Rob Butler has applauded the local people tackling climate change, in light of discussions on the topic at the G7 summit.

Mr Butler wanted to highlight the work done recently in Aylesbury to improve the climate, knowing world leaders were concentrating on the issue.

He said: “As world leaders focus on climate change at the G7 summit in Cornwall, it’s important to highlight the local people making a difference to our climate and our community every day.

“The team at the new, state-of-the-art Waste Transfer Station in Aylesbury have worked throughout Covid, collecting recycling from 88,000 homes. This can then be turned into new products instead of being sent to landfill.”

The MP for Aylesbury wanted to further highlight other initiatives within the town, including the Sustainable Smart Swaps project. He visited two of the retailers taking part in the programme to encourage people to live more environmentally-friendly lifestyles, Bokkie and Eco Bonobo, which have opened very recently in Duck Farm Court.

Mr Butler added: “I was delighted to be able to shop at Aylesbury’s newest independent firms so soon after they moved into permanent premises. Eco Bonobo is a zero-waste, refillable retailer. Instead of plastic packaging, customers take their own containers to fill up with everything from pasta to muesli, reducing landfill and harmful waste.

"Located next door is Bokkie, a South African café cooking delicious food with locally sourced ingredients from independent producers. I’m really pleased to see both shops opening in the area, making it even easier to be more environmentally-friendly in Bucks.

“I also spoke to members of a community group in Wendover which plans to plant 8,000 trees over the next three years. This ties in with plans by a group from St Mary’s church,

who explained to me how they want to progress to the first tier of Eco Church accreditation.

“From the volunteers I’ve been out with litter picking, to the recycling teams, to the local business people opening sustainable shops, our community is rallying to tackle the

crucial challenge of climate change and protect our environment for future generations.”
