Plan for up to 200 new homes and five traveller sites under consultation from today

Two designs have been put forward to show how Tring's LA5 development could be created

The proposals – made under the LA5 masterplan of Dacorum Borough Council’s core strategy for development until 2031 – also suggest that the nearby cemetery and industrial estate should be expanded.

The plans are being drawn up in anticipation of population growth and a new demand for homes in Tring, where more than 11,500 people currently live.

Under the council’s proposals, 40% of the new properties would be affordably priced. Of these, 75% will be rented and 25% will be sold through shared ownership.

The homes would be built on land between Icknield Way and Aylesbury Road, which is now made up of one large and two small paddocks and three medium-sized arable fields.

CALA Homes – which also built 14 ‘Dixons Wharf’ properties in nearby Wilstone – owns 9.9 hectares of the 18.3-hectare site. The developer controls most of the rest of it through option agreements.

Tring mayor Stephen Hearn said: “Houses are needed. They have got to be built and you have got to find places for them.”

But he said that perhaps there should be more shopping provision on the site. He also questioned where children in the new homes would go to school.

A public exhibition of the plans will be held at the Temperance Hall in Christchurch Road, Tring, from 2pm to 8pm on Tuesday, October 14.

Borough council officers will be on hand to answer questions during the event – which is one of five being held to consult people on development in Dacorum.

Other building programmes are planned for Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and Bovingdon.

A consultation on the proposals – laid out in the authority’s Site Allocations Development Plan Document – will run from today until 5.15pm on Wednesday, November 5.
