Picture Special: Clean for the Queen in Aylesbury

Clean For The Queen is a national campaign to clear up the streets, parks and hedgerows of Britain ahead of the Queen’s birthday in June.

Food packaging, plastic bottles, takeaway meals and cigarette butts were among the items tidied as part of the clear-up operation across the parish of Aylesbury town.

Pupils from Thomas Hickman School and Bearbrook School together with staff from the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust collected 92 bags of litter between them alone.

Aylesbury Lions, Aylesbury Town WI, Rotary Club of Aylesbury Hundreds, Haydon Hill Community Association, Aylesbury High School, town councillors and staff at McDonald’s High Street and Drive Thru all took part and collected more than 180 bags of litter.

More groups, including Aylesbury College and 1st Aylesbury Scout Group and Cubs, will be doing their bit over the next two months.

Cllr Peter Agoro, chairman of the communities committee at Aylesbury Town Council said: “We are very happy that so many groups, organisations and businesses in Aylesbury took part in this nationwide campaign and that more groups will be out cleaning over the coming weeks.

“This campaign is a great opportunity for the local community to get together and to make a direct impact on the town of Aylesbury.

“Taking pride in our environment and surroundings is also the ethos of our Aylesbury in Bloom initiatives where we often help groups with litter picks, so taking part in Clean For The Queen weekend was another way of positively supporting this community initiative.”
