The famous author of much-loved children's classics such as The Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr Fox lived in Great Missenden and was reportedly inspired to write the latter book during his time in Jones' Hill Wood.

On Saturday afternoon, 14 March, around 20 people of all ages showed up in the woods to read from Roald Dahl's books and to reminisce about how his stories shaped their childhood, while also showing their opposition to HS2.

Ross Monaghan, a member of Wendover Active Resistance who are supporting the camp said: “This camp and this ancient and beautiful woodland are just one of many under threat from HS2.

“But here we can see the complete lack of respect or care for our cultural history and the environment that we should cherish. This placed inspired a great writer, and what’s going on here is like a terrible tale.

“The farm neighbouring this land is being taken from the family that have been there for generations and will be left with virtually nothing. HS2 are destroying dreams and futures, they are literally destroying our heritage and woodlands along the way.”

A Chesham resident who attended the Roald Dahl event said: “Jones' Hill Wood is the last island of ancient trees in the area and is trapped between the two fences coming from each end of the valley.

“Not only is this woodland ancient and beautiful but it also has cultural and literary significance. We have to try and save what we can while we can. I don’t know how but I am prepared to try.”

The protest camp in Jones' Hill Wood formed two weeks ago and spokesperson has told The Bucks Herald that they are "planning on staying and holding the woods."
