Editor's column: However you stand politically no one deserves to be lied to

Well the election is over and I hope that your favourite candidate won! We certainly had a decisive vote in favour of the Conservatives here, which reflected the national picture.

I think one of the things that will stay with me from this election is quite disturbing. And it’s a real sense of how often we have been lied to during the campaign.

From Facebook posts, to political broadcasts and even local campaign flyers, it seems that many have resorted to (putting it kindly) stretching the truth to achieve what they hoped would be their favoured outcome.

“But politicians lie” I hear you cry. But isn’t that simply the worst? And I don’t think I’m being naive in saying that I think it’s been worse this time.

I also think, without denigrating my profession, that there is a greater need for impartiality rules in the media. How many times did you read or hear an opinion dressed up as fact? As a journalist I spotted this an awful, awful lot, and as a real believer in impartiality I think that is wrong.

Because we are all clever enough to make our own minds up, but let’s at least hope to have a bit of faith in the facts we base that all important decision on.
