Famous author Julia Jarman paid pupils at Haydon Abbey School a very special visit this week - to open their brand new library.

Julia visited the school on Tuesday, and spent the day imparting the joy of reading to the school children, she was invited back to open the new facility.

After cutting the red ribbon wrapped around the building like a birthday present, Julia, who is famous for penning stories including Big Red Bath and Class Two at the Zoo, led a whole school assembly where she talked about the wonder of reading and then shared one of her fantastic stories.

Speaking online ahead of the event, she said: "I'm off to Haydon Abbey in Aylesbury where I had a brilliant World Book Day last year.

"It's such a lively book-loving school and I'm delighted that they've asked me back."

A spokesperson for the school said: "As reading is at the heart of the school, we were determined to provide our children with a dedicated library.

"After considering many options, including using an old bus as a library space, we decided that a Summer House would be the perfect solution.

"Our Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) worked hard to raise £4000 for us. We also applied for funding from the One Stop Committee Fund and were fortunate enough to receive £1000 of funding from them. Wanting to use a local firm, we contacted Tim Snelling from ‘The Green Retreats Group’ who then provided us with the excellent building which now provides the school with a superb snug space to relax and enjoy a book."
