At a meeting in Number 11 Downing Street, Rob spoke to both the Chancellor, Sajid Javid MP, and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Rishi Sunak MP.

Although Mr Butler did not divulge exactly what was said during the no-doubt tense meeting, he did respond to press reports that the Chancellor is poised to back HS2, which would destroy homes, businesses and natural habitats in the Aylesbury Vale and beyond.

Mr Butler said: “I have repeated to the Chancellor that HS2 is too expensive and does too much harm to the environment. I am convinced that there are better ways to invest in our country’s infrastructure and benefit the towns of the midlands and north of England, than by spending more than £100bn on this train line.

"What’s more, for the people of the Aylesbury constituency, it is all pain and no gain. Along with other MPs who oppose HS2, I am seeking an urgent meeting with the prime minister before a final decision is taken”
