In the meeting the pair discussed the spiralling costs of the scheme, the validity of the Oakervee Review, and also the impact that construction and land grabs would have on local residents and businesses in the Aylesbury Vale.

Following the meeting Mr Butler wrote Mr Javid a letter, to hammer home the key points.

An extract from the letter read: "Given that the cost of the project has already risen to £81 - £88billion (2019 prices) from £55.7billion (2015 prices) and that the Prime Minister himself has indicated the final price might exceed £100billion, I would suggest that HS2 cannot possibly meet the tests of prudent public expenditure."

Mr Butler then went on to stress how local businesses in the Aylesbury Vale 'fear for their very survival' due to construction unheaval and loss of premises.

The letter also added: "I am concerned that the Oakervee Review has not had sufficient time to follow detailed process before making its recommendations, nor properly to reconsider the business case for HS2."

And Mr Butler stressed that the Oakervee Review may also have not had time to fully consider cheaper alternatives to HS2, which would not have as much of an impact.

The Bucks Herald has led the HS2: Enough Is Enough campaign and maintains that the Oakervee Review into the scheme is a publicity stunt for the Government and is rigged in favour of its survival.

HS2 has not yet had notice to proceed, yet people are being evicted from their homes - some say with no cash forthcoming from HS2 to find alternative accommodation.
