Parliament on lock down: Aylesbury MP David Lidington says to house 'There has been a serious incident'

Aylesbury MP David Lidington has addressed the House of Commons following a '˜serious incident' on Westminster Bridge this afternoon.

The Reuters news agency is reporting that several people have been injured following an incident on the bridge, which is close to the Houses of Parliament.

A policeman is understood to have been shot during the incident, which is unfolding at the time of writing.

Parliament is currently locked down and will be packed for the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session.

Mr Lidington, acting in his role as Leader of the House of Commons, said: “First of all colleges will have appreciated events have been moving rapidly and I want to emphasis that the knowledge I have is very limited

“There has been a serious incident within the estate - it seems that a police officer has been stabbed - that the alleged assailant was shot by armed police and an air ambulance is currently attending the scene to remove the casualties.

“Reports of further violent incidents in the vicinity but I hope colleges appreciate it would be wrong to go into further details until we have confirmation from the police about what is going on.

“I shall endeavor to do the best I can at the dispatch box and communicating with other parties to ensure members are up to speed with what’s happening.

“Directions from the police are that we should remain under suspension and the Parliament under lock down.”
